Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has officially announced his retirement from international football.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano disclosed that the veteran winger confirmed the decision during an interview with BeIN Sports.
The announcement came shortly after Algeria’s 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in the Round of 32 at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
Mahrez brings the curtain down on his international career after registering 40 goals and 45 assists in 119 appearances for the Algerian national team.
The 35-year-old was one of the standout performers during Algeria’s victorious 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, helping the Desert Warriors lift their second continental trophy.
Following his international retirement, Mahrez is expected to concentrate fully on his club career with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli.
