The UEFA Champions League league-phase draw is scheduled to take place on Thursday evening, with all 36 participating clubs already allocated across four pots.

Each team will be handed eight different opponents during the league phase, with two clubs selected from each of the four pots.

UEFA’s draw regulations include country protection, meaning clubs from the same domestic league cannot be paired against one another.

The governing body has also introduced a restriction preventing teams from having identical away fixtures across three consecutive seasons.

Real Madrid, managed by José Mourinho, will be unable to face fellow LaLiga clubs Atlético Madrid, Real Betis, Villarreal and Barcelona.

However, the Spanish giants are guaranteed to be drawn against two clubs from a group that includes PSG, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Inter Milan, Manchester City and Arsenal.

Barcelona will likewise be protected from facing their LaLiga rivals during the draw.

The Catalan club, however, will be certain to meet two teams from the likes of Inter Milan, PSG, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City.

Manchester United are set to make their return to the Champions League after spending two seasons away from the competition.

The Red Devils cannot be paired with fellow Premier League sides Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City or Aston Villa.

United will also be drawn against two Pot 1 opponents, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, PSG, Inter Milan and Atlético Madrid among the clubs they could potentially meet.

The draw is expected to produce several heavyweight fixtures as Europe’s top clubs discover their respective league-phase opponents.
