Real Madrid manager, Jose Mourinho, has stated that the Ballon d’Or should go to footballers whose absence would be deeply felt once they retire.

Mourinho made the remarks while speaking to journalists ahead of Real Madrid’s LaLiga encounter with Malaga.

The Portuguese manager mentioned Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, Diego Maradona and Ronaldo de Lima among the players who fit his criteria.

According to Mourinho, winning the Ballon d’Or should not be based solely on whether a player has won major trophies such as the Champions League or World Cup.

He argued that the individual impact and lasting influence of a footballer should also be considered when determining the recipient of the prestigious award.

He said: “The Ballon d’Or should go to one of those players when they retire, we miss them for eternity.

“Maradona, Cristiano, Messi, R9, Zidane.

“You can’t give the Ballon d’Or to a guy just for winning the Champions League or the World Cup.

“If you should give it to someone just for winning the Champions League, then give it to Luis Enrique.

“No, it needs to go to the best player in the world, not necessarily a Spanish or a PSG player.

“It needs to go to one of the 3-4 best players in the world, and those guys are here.

“But politics come into the Ballon d’Or, so I don’t like getting into politics.”
