Stanley Nwabali, the goalkeeper for Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), has received a warning not to go back to South Africa, according to Idah Peterside, a former media officer and goalkeeper for the Super Eagles.

After the Super Eagles defeated South Africa 4–2 on penalties in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations semifinal, he made this statement.

Nigeria defeated South Africa to go to the final, where they will face the Elephants of Ivory Coast in the marquee match on Sunday at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan thanks to two penalty saves by Nwabali.

“We have gotten some messages where people are sending messages to the goalkeeper threatening him. I heard some people were telling him, don’t come back to South Africa since you don’t want us to score payback when your team is playing,” he said in a viral video shared on X. (Sic).

“This is unacceptable. We have not heard of any violence but just threats. They have been threatening him and some people.”
