Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the outer city zone of Ibadanland in Oyo State have urged Governor Seyi Makinde to manage the state’s finances more responsibly.

They expressed concern over what they described as lavish expenditure and questionable financial decisions by the state government.

Their criticism follows public debate surrounding several state-funded projects, including the planned N63.5 billion renovation of the Agodi Government House.

They also raised issues with the reported payment of N14.3 billion for an Instrument Landing System (ILS) for Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, which is currently being upgraded. According to them, the same airport project had earlier consumed a total of N42 billion, followed by an additional N10 billion.

These concerns were highlighted in a communiqué issued after the group’s quarterly meeting on Wednesday, held at the APC Secretariat on New Ife Road in Egbeda Local Government Area.

In the communiqué, the party leaders criticized what they viewed as the governor’s repeated bypassing of proper procedures and warned that such actions could harm the long-term welfare of the state.

They stated, “Oyo State cannot be classified as financially buoyant, despite the fact that Governor Makinde receives over N22 billion from federal allocations in addition to nearly N10 billion generated internally every month.

“With a public debt hovering around N500 billion, it is alarming that the state government continues to embark on projects that do not align with prudent fiscal planning. These funds, especially those accruing from the removal of fuel subsidy, should be saved or invested in sustainable development for the future.”

The communiqué was signed by several key figures including Alhaji Kamorudeen Ajisafe (JP), Alhaji Rasaki Akilapa, Chief Lekan Adeyemo, Alhaji Sule Suara, Alhaji Isiaka Alimi, Hon. Kunle Jenrade, Comrade Moshood Erubami, Hon. Muniru Adebayo, Alhaji Yinka Folarin, and Bashorun Billy Ogundele.

Senator Yunus Akintunde, who represents Oyo Central Senatorial District, also attended the meeting to show his support for the party’s leadership.

One notable moment during the gathering was a speech delivered by members of a group known as the APC Peace Advocates. Led by Chief Wale Ohu and Prince Niran Adeyoju, the group called for greater unity and cooperation among party members.

They encouraged all stakeholders to work together toward reclaiming control of the state government in the 2027 elections.
