France Football, organisers of the Ballon d’Or, have clarified that a player can still win the prestigious individual prize even without securing a team trophy during the year under consideration.
The clarification was contained in a statement published on the organisation’s official website on Tuesday.
France Football noted that the situation has occurred six times in the history of the award, with Cristiano Ronaldo being the most recent player to achieve it in 2013.
Before Ronaldo, Denis Law won the award in 1964, while Gerd Muller followed the same path in 1970.
Kevin Keegan also claimed the honour in 1978, while Luis Figo accomplished the feat in 2000 despite ending the season without a major trophy.
However, the scenario has never occurred in the women’s Ballon d’Or since the award was introduced in 2018.
The winners of this year’s Ballon d’Or awards are expected to be unveiled at a ceremony scheduled to take place in London on October 26.
