BREAKING: Nigerian Government renames popular university as Yakubu Gowon University

The University of Abuja has been renamed by the Nigerian government, in honour of General Yakubu Gowon, the former military head of state.

Yakubu Gowon University will be the new name of the institution.

The name change was announced by Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, soon after the final 2024 Federal Executive Council meeting, which was presided over by President Bola Tinubu.

He clarified that the choice was made in appreciation of Gowon’s significant contribution to the development of the country.

Details will be provided later.
