Court makes fresh order in Adeniyi Adeyemi’s case

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has directed the Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, and the Nigeria Police Force to allow Adeniyi Adeyemi unrestricted access to lawyers of his choice.

Adeyemi has been linked to the alleged fake Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, PFIPC.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu issued the directive on Thursday while delivering a ruling on an ex parte application filed in a fundamental rights enforcement suit instituted by Adeyemi through his lawyer, M.B. Abdulazeez.

The court held that Adeyemi must be granted access to legal practitioners of his choice at reasonable hours for as long as he remains in custody.

Adeyemi had also requested several other reliefs, including bail, his release from detention and access to medical treatment from health practitioners of his choice.

His legal representatives further asked the court to stop the respondents, their officers and agents from interrogating him or compelling him to make, adopt or sign any statement without the presence of a lawyer chosen by him.

However, Justice Egwuatu refused to grant the remaining reliefs at the ex parte stage, ruling that the respondents must first be given the opportunity to present their side.

The judge consequently gave the AGF and the police 72 hours to show cause why the other reliefs sought by Adeyemi should not be granted.

The matter was subsequently adjourned until September 9 for the respondents to show cause.

Adeyemi had earlier been declared wanted in connection with allegations surrounding the purported PFIPC scandal.
