The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has disclosed that former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, is subject to stringent bail requirements before he can secure his release from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
El-Rufai has remained in ICPC detention since February 19.
The anti-graft agency had, on April 13, arraigned the former governor before a Kaduna High Court on an amended nine-count charge bordering on alleged abuse of office and fraud-related offences.
Speaking with journalists on Wednesday, the monarch revealed that the conditions outlined for El-Rufai’s release are unusually demanding.
According to him, authorities insisted that both a traditional ruler and a senior government official must stand as guarantors before the former governor can be granted bail.
Sanusi described the requirements as highly restrictive while referencing El-Rufai’s ongoing legal challenges.
He noted that the conditions imposed have made the process of securing the former governor’s release particularly difficult.
“For example, take a look at what’s going on with my brother, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai that he is currently in custody and the conditions for his release are very tough.
“They said that both an emir and a high-ranking government official need to sign his bail.”
