Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, has resigned.
According to ZINGTIE, this follows the independent Makin review’s findings that the Church of England concealed a barrister’s sexual assault.
Welby stated that the study “exposed the long-maintained conspiracy of silence about the heinous abuses of John Smyth” in response to calls for his resignation.
Welby claims that when he was informed in 2013 that Smyth had been reported to the police, he mistakenly thought that a suitable resolution would ensue.
In a statement, Welby said: “Having sought the gracious permission of His Majesty The King, I have decided to resign as Archbishop of Canterbury.“
“It is very clear that I must take personal and institutional responsibility for the long and retraumatizing period between 2013 and 2024”.
Last week saw the publication of the independent Makin study into the abuse of children and young men by John Smyth QC.
According to reports, John Smyth QC attacked his victims in a terrible way, including physically, sexually, psychologically, and spiritually.
According to the study, if Mr. Welby had formally reported it to the police ten years prior, he might have been prosecuted.
According to the study, Smyth was “never brought to justice for the abuse” because he passed away in Cape Town in 2018 at the age of 75 while Hampshire Police were investigating him.
