The senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Ireti Kingibe, has stated that she never had access to the report that resulted in the suspension of Kogi Central lawmaker, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Kingibe made the disclosure on Wednesday during an appearance on Arise Television’s “Prime Time”.
According to the senator, she was attending a retreat alongside Edo North Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, when information about the report reached her.
She explained that she had not seen the document that formed the basis of Natasha’s suspension.
The lawmaker noted that she was participating in a retreat at the time and had only attended part of the committee proceedings before leaving.
Kingibe said she was present with several other senators who were members of the committee and that they initially attended the meeting of the Committee on Petitions and Public Complaints.
She disclosed that after signing the attendance register, she departed for a tax reform retreat, which she believed was of greater significance to her constituents.
According to her, matters relating to tax reforms had a more direct impact on the people she represents than the disciplinary proceedings involving a fellow senator.
She added that she assumed other committee members who remained behind would handle the issue appropriately.
The senator further revealed that she expressed dissatisfaction to some of her colleagues over not having access to the report.
She specifically mentioned Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, saying she strongly complained to him about the situation.
Kingibe maintained that she had not seen the report at the time the suspension was considered.
She also stressed that up till now, she still has not had sight of the document.
“I never saw the report that led to Natasha’s suspension. I was at a retreat. I had earlier stated that I was there with three or four other senators who are members of the committee.
“We attended the Committee on Petitions and Public Complaints, signed the attendance register, and I later left for the tax reform retreat, which I considered more important at the time.
“It affects my constituents much more than disciplining a senator, and I figured that the other people who were not part of that committee would take care of it.
“I even complained to other Senators, specifically to Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe. I complained to him very bitterly that I had not seen that report. I didn’t see it then. I have not seen it till now,” she said.
