Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North, has disclosed that the late Chief MKO Abiola turned down attempts to surrender his presidential mandate to former military ruler, General Sani Abacha.

Oshiomhole made the revelation while delivering a lecture titled “June 12 and Beyond,” which examined Nigeria’s democratic journey and contemporary security challenges.

The programme was held in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

According to the former labour leader, he was among members of the Nigeria Labour Congress delegation that met with Abacha in Abuja following the annulment of the June 12 presidential election.

“General Abacha told us he was ready to tolerate anything and do anything for MKO Abiola.

“The one thing he was not ready to tolerate was the idea that Abiola had proclaimed himself President of Nigeria,” Oshiomhole said.

He explained that despite intense pressure from government officials and various intermediaries, Abiola remained unwavering in his determination to protect the mandate given to him by Nigerians.

“He told those who sent us that he was elected President of Nigeria and would not sell the mandate entrusted to him by the Nigerian people,” he said.

Oshiomhole described Abiola’s stance as a demonstration of courage, patriotism, and selflessness.

He noted that the late businessman and politician remained resolute even in the face of enormous pressure, despite the sacrifices made by millions of Nigerians who voted for him.

The senator urged younger generations to draw inspiration from the events of June 12, describing Abiola as a unifying figure whose electoral victory transcended ethnic and religious divisions.

He also stated that President Bola Tinubu remains committed to accelerating constitutional reforms aimed at paving the way for the establishment of state police across the country.

“The President is really committed to moving quickly and getting the state police amendment passed.

“He has clearly told us to get it done, but he can’t just make it happen on his own,” he said.
