Inspector-General of Police, Tunde Disu, has warned Nigerians against resorting to mob action, declaring that anyone who attacks or kills a suspect through jungle justice will be treated as a murder suspect.
Disu issued the warning in a viral video, stressing that mob action can no longer be justified as a form of community intervention.
According to the police chief, individuals who participate in the assault or killing of suspects through mob justice could face the full consequences of the law, including the death penalty for murder.
“Anybody who assaults or summarily executes a suspected criminal in the name of mob action is guilty of murder. And the punishment for murder is death,” Disu stated.
He further warned that people who encourage, coordinate or record mob attacks, distribute footage of such incidents, or obstruct police officers from intervening could face prosecution for conspiracy to commit murder.
Such an offence, he noted, carries a prison sentence of up to 14 years.
Disu disclosed that he had instructed Commissioners of Police in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to classify every mob action case as homicide and ensure comprehensive investigations.
He said the police would deploy forensic and intelligence resources in investigating such incidents.
“We are not going to spare anybody who is involved in mob action. We will do a thorough investigation, and we will take them to court,” he said.
The directive comes amid renewed concerns over extrajudicial killings and the growing resort to jungle justice across different parts of the country.
One of the recent cases involved 25-year-old University of Jos graduate Ibrahim Mbaya, who was reportedly beaten to death after being accused of stealing an iPhone 12.
The Nigeria Police Force urged members of the public to hand suspected criminals over to law enforcement authorities rather than taking the law into their own hands.
