The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans for a temporary traffic diversion along Baale Animashaun Road in Ifako-Ijaiye to facilitate the construction of a culvert under an ongoing drainage upgrade initiative.
Authorities disclosed that the diversion arrangement will begin on June 15, 2026, and will remain effective for a period of eight weeks.
The project is designed to improve stormwater evacuation from Adfarm Estate, Adson Street, and surrounding neighbourhoods through a newly built culvert that will pass beneath Baale Animashaun Road.
Speaking on Friday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, stated that restricting access to part of the road was necessary to ensure the safe and successful execution of the project.
Osiyemi explained that motorists approaching Baale Animashaun Road from the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway would be redirected through alternative routes throughout the construction period.
According to him, road users can navigate through Ijaiye Bus Stop Junction via Agbado-Ijaiye Road, popularly known as Post Office Road, before connecting to Alakuko Road and rejoining Baale Animashaun Road.
He added that another option is through Jendor Junction close to Alakuko Junction, from where motorists can proceed along Alhaji Ganiyu Road to reconnect with the affected route.
The commissioner also identified an additional diversion path through Ajegunle-Ilo Bus Stop Junction, linking Adetiba Street, Fagbeyiro Abayomi Street and Fola Azeez Street before reconnecting to the corridor.
He stressed that vehicles would not be permitted to enter Baale Animashaun Road directly from the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway while construction activities are ongoing.
“The construction work is scheduled to commence on June 15, 2026 and is expected to last for eight weeks. There will be no movement into Baale Animashaun Road from Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway as the road will be closed for the construction works,” he said.
Osiyemi appealed to motorists to cooperate with traffic management personnel stationed around the area and comply with all directional signs and diversion instructions to minimise disruptions.
“Motorists are advised to obey all traffic signs and follow the directives of traffic management officials to ensure smooth vehicular movement during the period,” he added.
The state government noted that the drainage intervention forms part of its broader strategy to strengthen flood control measures, improve environmental conditions and boost road safety across Lagos.
