The Italian government has forcefully pushed back against remarks credited to United States President Donald Trump, who allegedly suggested that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni pleaded for a photograph with him during the recent G7 summit in France.
The dispute surfaced on Friday after comments reportedly made by Trump during an interview broadcast on La7 television.
According to the reported remarks, Trump claimed Meloni sought a photo opportunity with him at the G7 gathering in Évian-les-Bains, adding that he agreed to the request despite not being under any obligation to do so.
The comments immediately triggered strong reactions in Italy, with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani describing them as offensive and disrespectful to both Meloni and the Italian nation.
In protest over the controversy, Tajani also cancelled a planned visit to the United States that had been scheduled for the weekend.
Responding through a video statement, Prime Minister Meloni rejected Trump’s version of events and said she considered it necessary to address the issue publicly.
“Donald Trump’s statements are completely fabricated. I am frankly stunned,” she said, while questioning “why the President of the United States behaves this way toward his own allies,” and noting that such an incident was not unprecedented.
She explained that she felt compelled to react because “certain things deserve an immediate response.”
Meloni went on to criticise Trump’s approach toward allied nations, declaring:
“I can only say that it is a shame he does not show the same determination toward the enemies of the West, toward the enemies of the United States, toward leaders with whom he is, instead, much more accommodating.”
She ended her response with a firm declaration: “But there is one thing he must remember: Italy and I do not beg.”
As of the time of filing this report, the White House had not responded to Meloni’s comments.
The latest exchange underscores widening friction between Washington and Rome on several international matters.
Although Meloni had long been regarded as one of Trump’s strongest allies in Europe, reports indicate that their relationship has faced strain over differing positions on the Iran conflict, the war in Ukraine, U.S. trade tariffs, and American backing for Israel’s military operations in Gaza.
Following Meloni’s statement, a number of senior Italian officials publicly rallied behind her, with support coming from across the political spectrum.
Transport Minister Matteo Salvini wrote: “Whoever attacks @GiorgiaMeloni attacks all of us.”
Justice Minister Carlo Nordio also condemned the reported remarks, stating:
“The thousands of crosses marking the graves of American soldiers who died to free us from Nazi-Fascist dictatorship did not deserve such a painful blow to our fraternal ties.”
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto likewise dismissed the notion that Meloni would make such a request, adding:
“I can, however, imagine how much it cost her to set aside what Trump had said weeks ago, to serve the interests of Italy, of Europe, and of the West. Jokes of this kind do no good to anyone: neither to the USA, nor to Italy, nor to the alliance.”
Prior to Trump’s inauguration in 2025, Meloni travelled to Mar-a-Lago for talks with him, describing the meeting as constructive, while Trump had also publicly praised her on several occasions in the past.
