On Tuesday, cardinals will begin relocating to their designated lodging within the Vatican in preparation for the conclave, scheduled to commence the following day a momentous and confidential event during which a new pope will be chosen.

Following the passing of Pope Francis on April 21, a total of 133 eligible cardinal electors are set to assemble in the Sistine Chapel on Wednesday to participate in the papal election, a process that could conclude within hours or extend for days or even months.

Typically, cardinals reside at the Santa Marta guesthouse within the Vatican, known for its private bathrooms and hotel-like amenities. However, due to limited availability, the facility cannot accommodate all of them.

With participants hailing from 70 nations across five continents, this gathering is expected to be the most extensive and globally diverse conclave in the Church’s history.

To accommodate the overflow, some cardinals will be lodged at Santa Marta Vecchia, an adjacent residence generally reserved for Vatican staff.

They will gain access to their rooms allocated by a random draw starting Tuesday, prior to the Mass on Wednesday morning that traditionally precedes the beginning of the conclave.

Both Pope Francis and his predecessor, Benedict XVI, were chosen within two days, though history records that the lengthiest papal election spanned from 1268 to 1271, taking 1,006 days to conclude.

On Tuesday morning, the cardinal electors those under the age of 80 as well as senior cardinals, gathered for the final session of their almost-daily meetings in preparation for the conclave.
