VIDEO: Nigerian lady laments marriage pressure from family and friends as she clocks 25

As she approaches 25, a Nigerian woman has taken to TikTok to bemoan the psychological effects of ongoing pressure from friends and family to be married.

According to user @izzza35, despite her not being ready and still figuring out her life, she has been urged to settle down by both family members and particularly married acquaintances. Since then, her article has gone viral and generated a range of online responses.

In her words: “This is me officially calling my family members out, and calling out my friends, especially my married friends. Please let me breathe; everything isn’t about marriage. Can I breathe? Can I figure out my life?”

“You’re married, please enjoy your marriage, don’t pressure me. You guys should stop pressuring me. Yes, fine, I’ll be 25 in three weeks—there are so many of my mates who are no more.”

“I am a Muslim, I am supposed to be married, I know, but leave me alone.”

“There are so many things I need to figure out as a lady. I don’t even have anything to show off for. Can you guys let me breathe? This is me officially calling them out. You people are messing with my mental health. I’m tired.”

“A friend of mine called me yesterday; I know she has been married for eight years.She said,‘Zainab, you should get married, even if it’s just to have a child.’ Can you guys let me breathe?”
