The Osun State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party-aligned Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has strongly condemned a protest recently held by council chairmen elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement issued on Thursday, the PDP-backed ALGON leadership dismissed the allegations made by the APC chairmen, who claimed that the state judiciary had violated court orders in local government administration matters.

The APC council chairmen staged the protest on Wednesday at the entrance of the Osun State High Court in Osogbo, where they voiced their grievances about the ongoing trial of officials from a commercial bank tied to local government allocations.

The demonstrators displayed placards with messages such as “Say no to disobedience of court orders” and “Disrespect for court judgements is an invitation to anarchy.”

Kolapo Olayanju, the chairman of Ejigbo Local Council Development Authority, spoke on behalf of the protesters, accusing the state judiciary and Governor Ademola Adeleke of ignoring legal directives.

However, the PDP ALGON leadership condemned the protest as improper and questioned its underlying motives.

The statement, jointly signed by Chairman Sarafa Awotunde and Secretary Lukman Afolabi, called the protest “embarrassing and disgraceful.”

The PDP group further accused the APC chairmen of unlawfully retaining control of council administrations well past their term.

According to the statement, “They have been occupying council offices for approximately 14 months after their tenure supposedly expired in October 2025 and continue to collect funds intended for local governments.”

The PDP leadership also raised concerns about the decision of the APC chairmen to protest at the court premises instead of respecting the due legal process.

“Do they want to stampede the judiciary? If they are certain of their claims, they should allow the court of law to determine the matter,” the statement concluded.

This dispute is a continuation of the ongoing conflict between officials elected in the October 2022 local government elections and those elected in the February 2025 polls, all vying for control of local councils in Osun State.
