The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu pays close attention to the views of Nigerians and considers their feedback before making necessary changes to government policies.
Idris disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja when a delegation from the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, led by its Director-General, Prof. Ayo Omotayo, paid a courtesy visit to the ministry.
According to the minister, the Ministry of Information and National Orientation has a responsibility beyond simply explaining government policies, as it also conveys the views and concerns of Nigerians to the administration.
He said the approach reflects President Tinubu’s willingness to engage with citizens and respond to their concerns as his administration implements its policies.
“Whenever I sit with him, the first question he asks is: ‘What are Nigerians saying?’” the minister said.
Idris explained that the President’s interest in public opinion shows that governance is an evolving process, with room for policies to be reviewed and adjusted where necessary.
“He is not merely a president who disseminates information or announces policy decisions. He also seeks to understand what Nigerians think,” Idris further stated.
The minister said his ministry therefore maintains a two-way communication channel, taking government policies and decisions to Nigerians while also transmitting citizens’ views back to the administration.
He added that the renewed focus on national orientation had strengthened the government’s ability to understand public opinion at the grassroots.
Idris disclosed that the National Orientation Agency has more than 800 offices spread across the country, providing it with extensive access to communities.
He said the agency is able to obtain feedback from farmers, artisans and other Nigerians, thereby helping the government better understand their concerns, needs and expectations.
The minister also pledged the ministry’s support for NIPSS in its research on the creative economy, which is the focus of the institute’s Senior Executive Course 48.
The former Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, was also present at the meeting.
Earlier, Omotayo revealed that NIPSS had chosen the creative economy, popularly referred to as the “Orange Economy”, as the theme of this year’s senior executive course.
He explained that the study would assess the opportunities and challenges in the sector, as well as its potential role in helping President Tinubu achieve his target of developing a trillion-dollar economy.
Omotayo said participants in the course had travelled to seven Nigerian states and several foreign countries to examine creative industries and collect relevant data for the research.
He further disclosed that NIPSS was preparing a National Summit and Exhibition on the Orange Economy, which would provide an opportunity for stakeholders to meet and showcase the sector’s potential.
According to him, the creative economy encompasses about 48 areas and possesses considerable potential for creating wealth and employment opportunities.
He pointed to Nigeria’s music industry as an example, noting that some Nigerian artistes had generated billions of naira from digital music platforms.
“We believe this particular sector can actually be one of the major sectors of the economy that will solve the problem of real unemployment,” Omotayo said.
He appealed to the Ministry of Information and National Orientation to collaborate with NIPSS on the organisation and promotion of the proposed summit.
Omotayo said the institute’s goal was to encourage Nigerians to pay greater attention to the creative economy and appreciate its potential to serve as a major engine of national development.
