The 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) officially began nationwide on Thursday, with over 2.2 million candidates expected to participate across accredited centers.

The examination, coordinated by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), is scheduled to run from April 16 to April 22, with multiple daily sessions.

During a virtual final briefing for technical officers ahead of the examination, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, urged examination officials to show the highest level of commitment and professionalism, emphasizing that the success of the UTME greatly depends on their performance and dedication.

Prof. Oloyede also commended staff, ad hoc personnel, service providers, and technical advisers for their efforts in ensuring the smooth conduct of the mock examination.

He noted that most of the challenges encountered during the mock exam were due to inadequate assessment of centers by some technical officials.

Oloyede also revealed that incentive packages would be provided to teams that demonstrate exceptional performance, including efficient handling of examination materials and timely report submissions.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance policy on examination malpractice, Oloyede cautioned candidates against bringing prohibited items into the exam halls.

He highlighted that advanced technology, including biometric verification and real-time monitoring systems, has been implemented to protect the integrity of the examination process.

The registrar further stated that candidates whose biometric details could not be verified would be rescheduled to sit the exam at designated centers approved by the board.

A NAN correspondent who monitored one of the centers at Aduvie International School, Jahi, reported that the first session, initially scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m., began at approximately 8:40 a.m.
