Aloy Ejimakor, legal counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has shed light on why the “City Boy” movement, a group backing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, failed to gain traction in Nigeria’s Southeast.

In a statement shared on X on Thursday, Ejimakor revealed that his findings pointed to widespread disinterest in electoral politics among many young people in the region as the main reason for the movement’s failure.

He explained that a significant number of Igbo youths are unwilling to participate in any general elections as long as Nnamdi Kanu remains imprisoned in Sokoto’s correctional center.

“From my investigations, the City Boys movement quickly failed in the Southeast because vast majorities of Igbo youths are not interested in any general elections that will be held while Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains in prison,” Ejimakor wrote.

He further emphasized that Kanu’s ongoing detention has become the central issue shaping political sentiment in the region.

“For them & for now, that is the #BigElephant in the room,” he added.

It is worth recalling that the “City Boy” movement appointed the popular hotelier and businessman, Obinna Iyiegbu, also known as Obi Cubana, as its Southeast Coordinator.

However, the movement’s efforts in Imo State were met with limited success.
