Another wave of violence has hit parts of Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, where suspected armed herders allegedly killed four people and injured 10 others in separate attacks carried out within two days.

Local residents disclosed that the violence began on Thursday when heavily armed attackers stormed farmlands in Anyiase, located in Moon Council Ward, and opened fire on farmers working in the area.

A community leader and survivor of the incident, Terzungwe Ajir, narrated that the attack occurred at about 3:20 p.m., leaving two farmers, identified as Asongo Nagwebe and Tarzan Agbahegh, dead on the spot.

He explained that 10 other victims sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to a hospital in Jato-Aka for medical attention.

According to Ajir, one of the injured victims later died while being moved to Makurdi for advanced treatment, bringing the death toll from the initial attack to three.

The community leader further revealed that the assailants launched another attack over the weekend, allegedly ambushing a commercial vehicle at Ikyogen Junction as residents attempted to escape the troubled communities.

He said the gunmen reportedly opened fire on the vehicle, killing one passenger instantly, while the remaining occupants fled into nearby bushes to save their lives.

Ajir expressed concern that the renewed attacks have deepened the humanitarian crisis in the area, forcing many residents to abandon their homes over fears of further violence.

“Our people have continued to live in fear. These attacks have persisted, and many families have now fled to safer locations,” he said.

Attempts to obtain a reaction from the Chairman of Kwande Local Government Area, Vitalis Neji, were unsuccessful, as calls placed to his mobile phone were not answered as of the time of filing this report.

Similarly, the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, did not respond to telephone calls or a text message seeking official confirmation of the incidents before press time.
