Two individuals were on Friday docked at an Okitipupa Chief Magistrates’ Court, Ondo State, for allegedly setting fire to a palm fruit plantation and maliciously injuring cassava stems worth N2.4 million.

Police accused 30-year-old aluminum fabricator Iseoluwa Adegbehindo and 45-year-old farmer Sunday Omopelumi of felony arson and intentional destruction.

The defendants conspired to conduct a criminal on April 13 at approximately 3 p.m. at Ladan farm in Ode-Aye, Okitipupa magisterial district, according to the Police Prosecutor, ASP Zedekiah Orogbemi, who testified in court.

According to Orogbemi, following a dispute, the defendants set fire to Pius Apalara’s N1.4 million palm fruit crop and trespassed onto his acreage.

Additionally, he stated that the defendants deliberately damaged a few immature cassava stems worth N800,000.

The offence, he added, is punished under Sections 516, 445(a) and 451, Criminal Code, Cap.37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.

The defendants, however, pled not guilty to the accusation.

They were granted bail of N200,000 apiece, along with a surety of the same amount, by Chief Magistrate Mr. Olanrewaju Àdelegan.

He mandated that the sureties, who had to live within the court’s jurisdiction, provide proof of two years’ worth of state government tax payments.

For a follow-up hearing, he postponed the case until June 3.
