Peter Obi, who was a Labour Party presidential candidate, has expressed sorrow over Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar’s arrest following Umar’s visit to Kaduna, where he was hosted by Obi.
Obi stated in a Tuesday post on his verified X account that such concerning developments in the country’s political landscape must be addressed early on.
He stated that it is the duty of the Federal Government to protect freedom and free speech, as these are the defining features of all democratic societies.
He stated that in a democracy, suppression and intimidation of dissent are unacceptable, emphasizing that the Nigerian government must grasp the realities.
“I have just been made aware early this morning that Revered religious leader, Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar has been arrested by authorities shortly after hosting me in Kaduna on Sunday.
“This development underscores the deeply troubling state of our nation and our democracy, where freedom of speech and movement is increasingly threatened, and where citizens and perceived political opponents face harassment and unnecessary persecution. This cannot be allowed to continue.
“I respectfully call on all those bent on undermining our already fragile democracy to please stop and apply the rule of law and tenets of democracy in dealing with citizens,” he wrote.
