While many of these entertainers publicly spoke about their battles with the illness, others kept their struggles away from the public until their death.
The recurring cases of the disease have continued to spark conversations among netizens.
The latest and perhaps most shocking among them is the death of Alex Ekubo.
ZINGTIE reports that Alex Ekubo, a prominent Nollywood actor, died on May 11, 2026, following complications arising from kidney cancer.
The 75-year-old veteran actor reportedly died from prostate cancer on July 18, 2025.
Tom Njemanze passed away about three weeks after appealing for financial assistance for an urgent surgery.
Everyday People actress, Ify Onwuemene, died on May 25, 2021, after battling stage 4 endometrial cancer for years.
Ify, who underwent eight chemotherapy sessions, also had her womb removed before her death.
Popular Nollywood actress, Aishat Abimbola, widely known as Omoge Campus, died in Canada on May 15, 2018, after battling breast cancer.
The then chairman of the Actors Guild of Nigeria Lagos State chapter, Emeka Rising, confirmed Doris Chima’s death in August 2021.
The veteran actress, who reportedly lost one of her breasts to breast cancer, later died from complications linked to the disease.
Nollywood actor Karibi Fubara died in December 2021 from kidney tumour/cancer.
He passed away a year after surviving a surgery in 2020 to remove about 90 per cent of the kidney tumour.
Legendary reggae singer Majekodunmi Fasheke, popularly known as Majek Fashek, died in June 2020 after battling esophageal cancer.
Sonny Okosuns, the legendary Nigerian musician and political activist with international recognition, reportedly died from colon cancer on May 24, 2008, in Washington.
Popular Nigerian gospel singer Aduke Gold reportedly died from cervical cancer on August 11, 2024, at the University College Hospital in Ibadan.
One of Nigeria’s most influential music icons, Olanrewaju Fasasi, professionally known as Sound Sultan, died in the United States on July 11, 2021, at the age of 44.
He died after battling a rare blood cancer known as Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.
