The shooting of two National Guard soldiers blocks from the White House on Wednesday was denounced by US President Donald Trump as a “act of terror” and claimed that the attacker was an Afghan migrant.

“This heinous assault was an act of evil, an act of hatred and an act of terror,” Trump said, as he vowed to have his administration “reexamine every single alien who has entered our country from Afghanistan” during his predecessor Joe Biden’s presidency.

Two blocks from the White House, US National Guard members were shot and badly injured on Wednesday. According to police, a suspect has been detained.

“Please join me in praying for the two National Guardsmen who were just shot moments ago in Washington DC,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said on X.

After hearing many loud pops that sounded like gunshots, an AFP reporter on the site reported seeing people fleeing Farragut Square, a busy and well-liked outdoor space close to the White House and a metro station.

According to a spokesman, Trump was promptly informed of the “tragic” incident while he was in Florida.

Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, “The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price.”

Three gunshot victims were attended to and taken from the scene by emergency personnel, according to local officials.

Guns drawn, the Secret Service was visible behind yellow police tape.

“We heard gunshots. We were waiting at the traffic light and there were several shots, Angela Perry, who was in her car with her two children, told AFP.

“You could see National Guard running toward the metro with their weapons drawn,” the 42-year-old said.

In order to fight crime and carry out his crackdown on undocumented immigrants, Trump has dispatched National Guard troops to Democratic-run Washington, Los Angeles, and Memphis.

A federal court declared last Thursday that Trump’s deployment of thousands of National Guard soldiers in the US capital was illegal.

Earlier this year, California contested his exceptional domestic use of the Guard after the president dispatched troops to Los Angeles to put an end to demonstrations caused by the detention of undocumented migrants.
