The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has initiated an investigation into allegations of extortion and “obtaining by trick” targeting prospective corps members during the NYSC mobilisation process. In a memo dated May 27, 2025, and signed by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Egaga Patrick Ikani, the university expressed deep concern over “unethical, embarrassing, and unacceptable” practices carried out by some Corps Mobilisation Officers (CMOs).

The memo stated that these officers, allegedly in collaboration with certain department heads, demanded unauthorised fees from students as part of their mobilisation for national service. “For the avoidance of doubt, NYSC mobilisation is free and devoid of any form of charge,” the memo emphasised.
To address the situation, the university has formed a Secret Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the allegations and enforce refunds and accountability. Any CMO or Head of Department found guilty will face disciplinary action, with their names forwarded to management alongside unfavourable reports.

Prof. Ikani urged students and the university community to report any breaches directly to the Dean of Students, assuring strict confidentiality. The university aims to hold culpable individuals accountable and ensure a fair mobilization process for all students
