USAID Funds: FBI Moves to Uncover What Happened to Millions Released in Nigeria

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, is set to work with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to investigate alleged mismanagement and diversion of funds allocated to US-backed health programmes in Nigeria.

The investigation is expected to cover all organisations and groups that benefited from programmes funded by the United States Agency for International Development, USAID, particularly initiatives focused on HIV and tuberculosis interventions.

The FBI made the request during a meeting with the EFCC in Lagos, as the two countries seek to strengthen collaboration in tackling financial crimes involving international funds.

EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, disclosed in a statement that the request was made by Marcus Maccain, Assistant Law Enforcement Attaché of the FBI, during his visit to the EFCC Acting Zonal Director in Lagos.

Maccain explained that the engagement was aimed at strengthening cooperation between both agencies while supporting investigations into alleged financial irregularities involving organisations that implemented US-funded programmes in Nigeria.

According to him, the investigation would focus on funds released before some of the USAID-supported programmes were terminated, following questions over how implementing organisations managed money that remained in their possession after the programmes ended.

“We are seeking stronger engagement with the EFCC to establish how the funds were managed and identify possible financial misconduct arising from the termination of the programmes,” Maccain said.
