After allegedly jumping from the fourth floor of Jumuira Heights in Nairobi, 22-year-old domestic worker Shanny Atieno is fighting for her life at Kenyatta National Hospital.

According to Atieno, she jumped to get away from her employer’s constant mistreatment, which included beatings with rollers, knives, and frying sticks.

Atieno, who had been working for less than two months, suffered serious injuries in the accident, including a shattered leg and a fractured spine.

This is in line with previous medical records that showed care for head injuries purportedly brought on by physical assaults.

Atieno described terrifying threats she received from her boss, Lavender Akinyi Ojilo, who claimed said she might hurt her without facing any repercussions. “She told me others before me had disappeared,” Atieno disclosed.

These allegations were supported by the victim’s sister, who stated that the employer had a history of menacing behavior toward domestic workers.

According to police data, Lavender was involved in theft and burglary in Kileleshwa in 2018 and 2019.

She was arrested for her role in home invasions in April of this year. Lavender disputes the accusations made against her, even though she has a criminal history.

The family of Atieno denies that the occurrence was caused by despair and calls on authorities to carry out a thorough inquiry.

demand more justice and protection for domestic workers, who frequently endure abuse with few options.

This instance underscores how urgently Kenyan domestic workers need stronger legislation and rights.

Advocates emphasise how critical it is to raise knowledge of their rights, hold abusive employers accountable, and solve systemic issues in the industry.

National indignation has been triggered by Atieno’s horrific ordeal, bringing attention to the silent suffering of many domestic workers and prompting calls for urgent action to prevent such cases in the future.
