On January 3, 2026, US forces carried out a large-scale military operation in Venezuela, seizing President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were subsequently taken out of the country.

The major motive for Maduro’s detention was to transport him to the United States to face long-pending federal criminal charges in New York. These originate from a 2020 indictment (updated and unsealed in subsequent versions) charging him with heading a narco-terrorism conspiracy.

Prosecutors claim he conspired with Colombian rebel organizations (such as the FARC) and others to flood the United States with huge amounts of cocaine, using drug trafficking as a weapon against America while benefiting himself, his family, and his government.

Additional charges include cocaine importation conspiracy, possession of machine weapons and destructive devices, and other felonies.

U.S. officials, including President Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi, framed the action as enforcing an arrest order related to these indictments, with military strikes protecting those carrying it out.

Maduro and his wife are their route to New York for their trial.
