A chieftain of the Action Peoples Party (APP), Mazi Chima Matthew Amadi, has applauded the Court of Appeal’s judgment affirming the legal standing of the party.

Amadi described the verdict as a major triumph for democracy, the rule of law, and the shared aspirations of millions of Nigerians.

He stated that the ruling reaffirmed the enduring principle that justice will always prevail over attempts to erode the democratic rights of political parties and the constitutional freedoms of citizens.

According to him, the victory extends beyond the APP, belonging to every Nigerian who believes in a political system where the rule of law takes precedence over intimidation and manipulation.

In a statement released on Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Cajetan Duke, Amadi said the judgment had brought an end to what he described as needless legal distractions and uncertainties allegedly instigated by the ruling party against the APP.

He recalled that a three-member panel of the Court of Appeal, led by Justice Abba Mohammed, on Tuesday unanimously overturned the Federal High Court judgment delivered on June 15, 2026.

The appellate court ruled that the lower court lacked the jurisdiction required to entertain the matter.

It held that the suit filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL), seeking the deregistration of the APP and other opposition parties, was fundamentally incompetent because the NFFL is not a juristic person and therefore lacked the legal capacity to institute the action.

As a result, the court concluded that there was no valid suit before the Federal High Court upon which an order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the affected political parties could lawfully be based.

Amadi, who is the APP’s senatorial candidate for Imo East (Owerri Zone) in the 2027 election, commended the judiciary for what he described as its courage, independence and steadfast commitment to the Constitution.

He said the well-reasoned judgment had further strengthened public confidence in the judiciary while reinforcing the principle that justice must always be rooted in the law, due process and sound legal reasoning.

He also urged political stakeholders to respect judicial decisions and embrace healthy democratic competition built on ideas, integrity and service instead of hostility, intimidation or unnecessary litigation.

He maintained that democracy can only thrive where the rule of law is upheld and the independence of the judiciary is respected by all stakeholders.
