Windstorm destroys 209 houses in Yobe

Following a strong windstorm, residents around Yobe State’s Fika local government area saw the destruction of at least 209 homes.

This was revealed by Dr. Mohammed Goje, Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), at a National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) stakeholders’ engagement on the National Disaster Preparedness and Response Campaign (NPRC) in Damaturu.

“In 2025, we experienced one windstorm incidence in Fika local government area which affected about 209 households including public buildings.

“We are tracking and reviewing how we can support those affected communities,” Goje said.

According to YOSEMA data, in 2024 alone, windstorms and flooding impacted 28,977 houses (68,954 people) throughout Yobe State.

This is on top of the 544 people who were injured in various ways when buildings collapsed as a result of flooding.

According to the data, the tragedy caused 47 documented deaths in 601 villages spread over the state’s 17 local government units.

Regarding stakeholder engagement, NEMA Director General Mrs. Zubaida Umar, through North East Zonal Director Yakubu Suleiman, stated that it is now important to involve states in the area after the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) released its 2025 seasonal climate prediction and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) released its annual flood outlook.

According to her, the involvement was a proactive step to lessen the disaster’s effects in communities that were at high risk.

The campaign is themed ‘Strengthening resilience, enhancing preparedness and response: Taking disaster risk management to the grassroots to save lives, restore normalcy and build communal resilience across Nigeria’.
