Argentina captain Lionel Messi has identified the major shortcomings in his team’s display during their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 showdown against Cape Verde.

The Albiceleste were held to a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation time at the Miami Stadium before eventually securing a 3-2 victory after extra time.

An own goal by Diney Borges proved decisive as Lionel Scaloni’s men progressed to the next round at the expense of the Blue Sharks.

Reflecting on the encounter after the final whistle, Messi admitted that Argentina struggled to apply effective pressure on their opponents throughout the game.

The Inter Miami star also acknowledged that the South American champions lacked cohesion, noting that the team’s shape became stretched, with significant gaps between the defensive, midfield, and attacking lines.

“I think we couldn’t press them well, our lines were kind of far apart at times,” Messi said via FIFA’s website.

“When we wanted to jump from the defensive pivot, it was too far a distance for the center-backs, and we ended up a bit disjointed.

“They always had an extra man because we couldn’t match up, and that’s why they kept the ball and made us run, because we couldn’t press them properly.”
