The Convener of the League of Northern Democrats, Dr Umar Ardo, has claimed that northern Nigeria is increasingly turning against President Bola Tinubu’s administration and its policies.
Ardo made the assertion on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show.
He attributed the growing dissatisfaction in the region to worsening insecurity, rising poverty and the increasing cost of living under the current administration.
According to him, Tinubu could secure less than 10 per cent of the votes cast in northern Nigeria in the 2027 presidential election if the poll is conducted freely and fairly.
Ardo blamed the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira for intensifying economic hardship across the region, where many households depend on farming and small-scale trading for their livelihoods.
He explained that insecurity, particularly banditry and kidnapping, had made it increasingly difficult for farmers to access their farmlands, while soaring food and transportation costs had further strained household finances.
“The North has a dislike for the Tinubu administration. Not necessarily for Tinubu as a person, because 99.99% of Nigerians do not know Tinubu as a person. So what they dislike is Tinubu’s policies.
“And over the years, Tinubu has not been able to change those policies to align with what people perceive to be skewed towards his own territory. So the North that gave Tinubu 63.6% of the total votes in 2023 is basically in revolt,” he said.
The northern political leader also claimed that many people in the region felt excluded from federal appointments and believed the government had not done enough to address their challenges.
He maintained that these concerns could significantly affect Tinubu’s electoral prospects in the North as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
