The Lagos State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) officially received Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in the 2023 elections, into the party on Saturday. His defection was described as a significant step in the ADC’s broader effort to unite opposition forces ahead of the 2027 elections.

The welcome event took place in Alimosho Local Government Area and drew the presence of party executives, loyal supporters, and key political figures. Many attendees viewed Rhodes-Vivour’s move as a meaningful stride toward creating a stronger opposition front in Lagos and potentially across Nigeria.

During the gathering, ADC Lagos Chairman, Mr. George Ashiru, emphasized that the occasion was about more than just welcoming a new member. He highlighted the broader political significance, stating:
“We are not affirming one man; we are affirming a movement. What Rhodes-Vivour represents is the leadership of a movement that shook Lagos in the last election. The coalition did not start three months ago, it began two years ago, and today we are celebrating it.”

Ashiru also reiterated the party’s vision of inclusiveness and equal opportunity, noting:
“Our goal is to build a global Lagos, a Lagos for everybody, where citizens and their children can find opportunities for the future.”

In a show of support, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar extended a message of solidarity to the ADC. His message, delivered through Professor Ola Olateju, praised the ongoing coalition efforts and described the ADC as more than a typical political party.

“ADC is not just a political party; it is a movement of the people. With this philosophy, anybody can become anything irrespective of ethnic group, religion, or class,” Atiku’s message read.
