The General Officer Commanding, 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Auwalu Mahmuda, has directed troops deployed for security operations during the Osun State off-cycle governorship election to maintain professionalism and strictly observe the Code of Conduct for Election Duty.

Mahmuda gave the directive while addressing troops preparing to assist the Nigeria Police Force during the election at the Engineer Construction Command in Ede, Osun State, on Friday.

The directive was contained in a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, 2 Division Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Danjuma Jonah Danjuma.

The GOC said the troops have an important role to play under the Nigerian Army’s constitutional responsibility of providing support to civil authorities.

He explained that the military operation, code-named “Operation SAFE CONDUCT, was established to support the Nigeria Police Force, which remains the primary agency responsible for election security and the conduct of elections across the country.

Mahmuda stated that the soldiers are expected to provide security around the outer cordon and intervene in security incidents only when their assistance is required.

He specifically instructed the troops to keep away from polling units while taking appropriate action against security threats capable of disrupting the peaceful conduct of the election.

“The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, expects nothing short of professional conduct by the troops in support of the NPF,” Mahmuda said.

The Army commander urged the troops to avoid personal sentiments, partiality and any conduct capable of compromising their responsibilities, stressing that their actions must always be guided by the national interest.

Mahmuda further instructed the soldiers to remain disciplined and sustain a strong security presence without intimidating or harassing members of the public.

He assured the troops that adequate resources had been made available to ensure the effective implementation of Operation SAFE CONDUCT.

The GOC also appealed to residents of Osun State to trust the security measures put in place for the election, assuring them that the deployment was intended to preserve law and order and allow citizens to exercise their constitutional rights without hindrance.
