Voters at a polling centre in Ejigbo Local Government Area of Osun State have accused individuals suspected to be supporters of the All Progressives Congress, APC, of distributing cash during the ongoing governorship election.
The incident was reportedly recorded on video at Ward 4, Unit 7, where voters confronted people they alleged were attempting to influence the election through cash distribution.
According to accounts from voters at the scene, the incident occurred at about 9:30 a.m., while a similar allegation was later made at Ward 4, Unit 13 around 10:30 a.m.
One of the voters claimed that those allegedly involved in the distribution of the money escaped from the area with part of the cash packed inside a polythene bag.
“We don’t know how much was there. They ran away and used a polythene bag to take the money away,” the voter said in the video.
The voter further alleged that the individuals continued distributing money despite existing instructions prohibiting the sharing of cash at polling centres.
“The rule given to us was that we should not give money to anyone. We did not cause any trouble; we were only running after them,” the voter said.
Some voters also displayed cash they claimed to have collected from the alleged distributors, alongside a card they identified as belonging to the APC.
“This is the evidence. The card they used belongs to the APC, and their logo is on it,” the voter said.
The incident reportedly took place at the polling unit of Najeem Folasayo Salaam, popularly known as Iwaloye, who is the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
However, the voters maintained that the individuals allegedly caught distributing the money were connected to the APC, pointing to the displayed APC card as evidence supporting their claim.
“We are talking about Iwaloye, the ADC candidate. At his unit, APC members are sharing money. It happened at about 9:30am in Unit 7 and 10:30am in Unit 13,” the voter alleged.
The allegations have added another layer of controversy to the ongoing Osun governorship election, with the claims yet to be independently verified.
