The Kano State Special Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking has rejected reports suggesting that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, intends to release a luxury passenger bus seized during a major drug trafficking investigation.

Chairman of the task force, Muhuyi Magaji, said investigations involving the vehicle and other suspects connected to the case were still in progress.

He stressed that the matter would be allowed to proceed to prosecution once the investigation is concluded.

The NDLEA reportedly intercepted the bus during an intelligence-driven operation in August, resulting in the recovery of illicit drugs estimated to be worth about N500 million from, or linked to, the vehicle.

Six suspects, identified as Onyeka Vincent, Success Chibuzie, Nwankwo Wisdom, Emmanuel Jude, Chinedu Peter and Okodili Ogbuach, were also reportedly arrested during the operation.

The case attracted public concern after reports emerged suggesting that the bus, said to belong to a prominent businessman, could be released while investigations were still ongoing.

Reacting to the reports, Magaji disclosed that he had contacted the Kano State NDLEA Commander, who confirmed that the investigation was yet to be completed.

He further revealed that some drivers and conductors had been invited for questioning, while preliminary findings indicated “some level of complicity” in the matter.

According to Magaji, determining who owns the vehicle would also be an important part of the investigation.

He argued that the claim that a property was used in criminal activities without the owner’s knowledge should not, by itself, be sufficient to completely remove the owner from scrutiny.

“I can assure you that the leadership of the NDLEA, together with the Kano State Government, is monitoring the case closely.

“We will follow the matter through to prosecution and will not allow any form of compromise,” Magaji said.

He called on Nigerians to wait for the conclusion of the investigation, assuring that the task force would pursue the matter “to the letter”, irrespective of the identities or status of those involved.
