Dr Lawan Ahmed Mohammed, the eldest son of the late Emir of Gumel, HRH Alhaji (Dr) Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, has been named the 17th Emir of the Gumel Emirate.

The appointment received the approval of Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar A. Namadi, following recommendations from the Gumel Emirate Council kingmakers and the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs.

The Secretary to the Jigawa State Government, Malam Bala Ibrahim, announced the development while addressing journalists after the selection exercise.

He explained that the kingmakers conducted extensive consultations among nine contenders seeking the traditional throne.

According to him, three of the nine aspirants later pulled out of the contest, leaving six candidates to take part in the selection process.

During the first round of voting, three contestants emerged and advanced to the next stage. They were the Chiroman Gumel, Tafidan Gumel and Sarkin Dawaki.

The names of the three candidates were thereafter submitted to the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs, which forwarded them to Governor Namadi for the final decision.

The governor subsequently approved the appointment of the Chiroman Gumel, Dr Lawan Ahmed Mohammed, as the successor to his late father.

Before his emergence as emir, Dr Lawan held the traditional title of Chiroman Gumel and worked as Director of Cyber Security at the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA.

The new emir is an internationally recognised academic with a PhD in Computer and Communication Systems Engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia.

He also obtained an MSc in Computing from De Montfort University in the United Kingdom, an MSc in Operations Research from Universiti Putra Malaysia and a BSc in Mathematics from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Dr Lawan previously spent more than 12 years as Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Hafr Al-Batin in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

He is also a researcher and author with more than 40 publications in areas including computing, cybersecurity and digital identity.

His professional contributions have also extended to cybersecurity initiatives involving AfricaCERT, ITU, OIC-CERT, ECOWAS and ANCA.

Dr Lawan takes over the throne from his father, who died on Thursday, September 3, 2026, after reigning as Emir of Gumel for 46 years.
