Suspected bandits have reportedly killed scores of people in an attack on Binnari community in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The assailants, believed to have entered the area from neighbouring Plateau State, reportedly stormed the community in Amar Ward, Karim II Constituency, in the early hours of Friday. They allegedly killed residents, set houses ablaze and destroyed food supplies valued at millions of naira.

Local sources said the violence forced numerous residents to abandon their homes and escape to nearby communities, while several people were reported missing.

Located along the border with Plateau State, Binnari has faced repeated security threats in recent months, including suspected bandit attacks, kidnappings and reprisal violence.

Residents claimed that emergency calls were made during the assault, but security personnel arrived too late to prevent the killings and destruction.

The latest attack has intensified fears about the deteriorating security situation, prompting residents to appeal to the Taraba State Government and relevant security agencies to take immediate steps to safeguard lives and property.

They also called on the state and federal governments to send more security personnel to the affected community, provide relief supplies for displaced families and ensure the arrest and prosecution of those behind the attack.

Reacting to the reported incident, Dr. Tijo Kenneth Mingeh, the Accord Party candidate for Ardo-Kola, Karim Lamido and Lau Federal Constituency, condemned the killings and destruction in Binnari.

Mingeh voiced concern over the reported deaths, the destruction of houses and shops by fire, and the suffering caused by repeated attacks on communities across the constituency.

He advocated coordinated security operations to safeguard vulnerable communities, improve intelligence gathering and prevent further violence.

The Accord Party candidate also called on security agencies to increase surveillance in the affected areas, arrest those responsible for the killings and ensure they face justice.

Mingeh further stressed the importance of providing adequate assistance to families impacted by the attack, noting that persistent insecurity continued to endanger the livelihoods of rural residents, many of whom rely on farming for their survival.

He called for joint action involving security agencies, government officials, community leaders and residents to restore peace and stability in Binnari and surrounding communities.

In a separate reaction, the incumbent member representing Ardo-Kola, Karim Lamido and Lau Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, A.M. Lauya, condemned the attack and expressed concern over the reported deaths of innocent people, the burning of homes and shops, and the fear and hardship experienced by residents of the affected communities.

Lauya urged authorities to implement urgent, coordinated security measures to protect vulnerable communities, enhance intelligence gathering, prevent further attacks and ensure the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

He also highlighted the need to provide sufficient assistance to families affected by the tragedy.

The lawmaker reiterated that restoring peace and security in the affected areas would require collective action by security agencies, relevant authorities, community leaders and residents.

ZINGTIE reports that, as of the time this report was filed, neither the Taraba State Government nor security agencies had officially confirmed the reported death toll or the circumstances of the attack.
