Jude Ezenwafor, the only candidate, has been granted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket for the Anambra gubernatorial election.
The Professor Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre in the state capital of Awka hosted the PDP governorship primary on Tuesday, according to ZINGTIE.
At the conclusion of the exercise, Ezenwafor was named the party’s flagbearer by Chijioke Onwubuya, chairman of the state governorship election congress committee.
Onwubuya claimed Ezenwafor secured 798 ‘yes’ votes, with 26 invalid votes, noting that 853 delegates were accredited out of the 999 on the roster for the congress.
“By the power vested in me and in line with PDP rules, I hereby declare Jude Ezenwafor our candidate,” he said.
He said that the procedure complied with election regulations and the PDP constitution.
Following his win, Ezenwafor urged voters to back the PDP’s attempt to regain control of the state, saying the party was on a rescue mission in Anambra.
He claimed to have entered the contest to bring the PDP back to the government house in Anambra.
“If you support me, the dream will come true. They say PDP is dead, but I will prove them wrong. All LGA and ward chairmen are now automatic coordinators in their areas. Our journey to Government House has begun,” he said.
Chidi Chidebe, the PDP’s state chairman, stated that Anambra now regrets rejecting the party and that the party is coming into the election strengthened, united, and revitalized.
He added that the PDP is still Nigeria’s most liberal platform, having established “today’s core governance structures,” and that many of the party’s former members have returned after having unsatisfactory experiences elsewhere.
The election for governor of Anambra is scheduled for November 8, according to the ZINGTIE.
