A 50-year-old woman reportedly linked to Boko Haram/ISWAP has escaped from a terrorist enclave in the Mandara Mountains and surrendered to troops of Operation Hadin Kai in Borno State.

The development was disclosed by security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, in a post shared via his X handle.

Military sources revealed that the woman, identified as Ghwa’a Biwa, surrendered to troops of the 192 Battalion (Mechanised) stationed at a company location in Gwoza Local Government Area.

According to the sources, she escaped from the camp of a terrorist commander identified as Wa’a, situated within the Mandara Mountains, before surrendering to troops on June 2.

Preliminary investigations indicated that deteriorating living conditions inside the enclave, including shortages of essential supplies, influenced her decision to flee.

The sources further stated that sustained military offensives against terrorist camps in the region have continued to worsen conditions for insurgents and their families.

“She was properly screened and documented upon surrender and is currently in military custody for further necessary action,” the sources said.

Security sources added that the incident reflects a growing pattern of escapes and voluntary surrenders from terrorist camps in the North-East, driven by intensified military operations across the region.

Military authorities noted that although the overall security situation remains calm, it is still unpredictable, with troops maintaining a high level of operational alertness.

They reiterated that efforts under Operation Hadin Kai remain focused on dismantling terrorist enclaves and encouraging more defections from insurgent groups and their families.
