The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has called on Nigerian leaders to place the safety and welfare of citizens above political party interests.
CAN also urged authorities to ensure the immediate release of kidnapped schoolchildren and teachers across the country.
The appeal was contained in a communique issued after the 2026 National Church Denominational Leaders Summit held in Abuja. The communique was presented by the President of CAN, Archbishop Daniel Okoh.
The association further appealed to security agencies to intensify efforts towards rescuing all abducted victims and ensuring their safe return.
Parts of the communique read: “CAN is demanding the immediate and complete release of all schoolchildren, teachers, and other citizens who are currently being held captive by criminal groups throughout the country and calls on security agencies to intensify rescue efforts until every victim regains freedom.
“CAN is asking political leaders, political parties, and people in public positions to put the safety of Nigerians first instead of focusing on political conflicts, heated words, and early election activities.
“They should focus the country’s efforts on bringing back peace, keeping citizens safe, and rebuilding trust in the government.”
