An Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo on Tuesday sentenced a commercial motorcycle rider, Micheal Effiong Japhet, to life imprisonment for raping a married woman and nursing mother.
Japhet was convicted and sentenced by Hon. Justice Archibong Archibong after the court found him guilty of rape and stealing, offences punishable under the Criminal Code Laws of Akwa Ibom State, 2000.
Facts presented before the court showed that the victim, a nursing mother who also sells fruits, boarded the commercial motorcyclist after closing her business for the day at Ikom Iman Junction, heading to her residence at Ikot Ofon on February 23, 2015.
However, instead of taking the usual route, the rider reportedly diverted onto a bush path, claiming that his motorcycle had run out of fuel.
The court heard that the convict produced a knife and threatened to stab the victim before stealing her purse containing N7,000 and a China Nokia phone.
He subsequently forcefully had a canal knowledge of the woman despite her pleas that she is a nursing mother and married woman.
It was further gathered that the victim later spotted the convict while on her way to her place of business and immediately alerted her husband, who rushed to the scene, recovered her phone and ensured the suspect was handed over to the police.
Delivering judgment, Justice Archibong Archibong sentenced Japhet to life imprisonment for rape and an additional three years’ imprisonment for stealing.
