The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of worsening the lives of Nigerians through its economic policies, triggering a war of words between representatives of the two parties.
The APC spokesperson, Felix Morka, fired back by blaming former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for contributing to the country’s economic difficulties.
The exchange occurred on Thursday during an appearance on News Central’s Breakfast Central, where both men discussed the APC-led administration’s performance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during the programme, ADC spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi argued that policies introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration had further deteriorated living conditions across the country.
He urged the government to acknowledge its shortcomings and reconsider its approach to managing the economy.
Abdullahi compared the administration’s economic strategy to an attempt to repair a pothole that ultimately leaves the entire road in a worse condition.
“What they tried to do in the last three is like trying to fill a pothole, and in the process they end up leaving the economy in a ditch,” Abdullahi said.
The ADC spokesman maintained that the success of government policies should be measured by their actual impact on citizens rather than the administration’s claims about their effectiveness.
“There is nothing wrong in admitting that your prescription or your solution has not worked,” he said.
Morka, however, rejected the criticism and accused Atiku Abubakar, the ADC’s presidential candidate, of playing a significant role in the economic challenges confronting Nigeria.
He questioned the former vice president’s record in public office, arguing that his time in government contributed to the country’s economic decline.
“Let me make clear that my good friend speaks for a candidate who is easily the most critical actor in the economic sabotage of this country,” Morka said.
The APC spokesman further alleged that the former vice president left behind a poor record of governance and accused the administration in which Atiku served of mismanaging $16 billion allocated for electricity projects.
He argued that the current APC-led government was working to address economic problems inherited from previous administrations, including the one in which Atiku served.
According to him, Atiku “left a sordid record of performance; destroyed Nigeria’s national assets; created the economic void that governments since then have been trying to fill; squandered 16 billion US dollars meant to provide electricity.”
