The Asisat Oshoala Academy recently hosted an empowerment event for nearly 100 girls from surrounding communities at Obele Secondary School in Surulere, Lagos. The event, part of the Sports, Humanitarian, and Education (SHE) Project, featured Taekwondo sessions, leadership development workshops, CPR training, and personal hygiene education.

Alabi Kazeem, Head of Technical at the Asisat Oshoala Academy, explained the strategic choice of venue, saying, “Surulere is a sports city. That’s why we chose Obele Odan High School and Ideal High School to ensure more girls benefit from what the SHE Project has mapped out for them.” Kazeem emphasised the need to discover and nurture grassroots talent, highlighting the program’s impact.
The academy discovered Janet Akekeromowei, the 2025 Most Valuable Player of the Nigerian Women’s League, at one of their events. Kazeem noted, “She was discovered at one of our events at Police College, Ikeja. She was MVP and top scorer last season. She has also represented Nigeria’s U-17 and U-20 women’s teams.
Programme coordinator Oluwaseun Savage explained the broader vision behind the initiative, saying, “We want girls to explore, not just in football, but across different areas. That’s why we included Taekwondo and hygiene education. A girl should know how to protect herself and maintain her well-being.”
Emzor Pharmaceuticals, a key partner, led a session on deworming and public health awareness. A company representative said their support stems from Oshoala’s inspiring impact on girls and women, stating, “Asisat is somebody that many women who are just coming up, women footballers in Nigeria look up to.”
The event proved transformational for many participants, with Yekini Eniola, a JSS3 student, planning to pass on the knowledge to her peers and family. Lara Zainab of Ideal High School was inspired to become an agent of change in her home and community.
The SHE Project, now in its third year, has reached communities across Lagos, uncovering hidden talent and nurturing leadership amongst girls. Organizers plan to expand to more densely populated areas across the state.
