After being discovered living in filthy conditions with a pack of dogs in a secluded hut in Uttaradit province, northern Thailand, an eight-year-old kid was rescued by Thai officials. The boy could only communicate by barking because he was unable to talk and had been abandoned by his drug-addled family.

After receiving a tip from the principal of a nearby school, who got in touch with children’s rights advocate Paveena Hongsakul, police conducted a joint raid on June 30 and found the boy. Officers discovered the boy, his mother, age 46, and brother, age 23, living in a run-down stilt house. Both people were charged with drug consumption after testing positive for drug use.

The boy has been denied both formal schooling and true human connection, according to Paveena. “He didn’t speak, he just barked. It was pitiful to see,” she said. The boy was kept at home forever after it was discovered that he had only been briefly taken to school once so the mother could collect government subsidy monies intended for his education.

The mother was frequently spotted pleading for food and cash at a neighboring temple, according to the neighbors. The boy was left alone with only the family’s six dogs for company after her unpredictable behavior caused local families to keep their kids away from him. He eventually started to imitate their actions and communicate by barking.

According to local police and Education Ministry officials, the house is located in a known drug area. The child had “no one, just the dogs to play with,” according to a teacher who knew the family.

Since then, the boy has been taken from the house and is being held in protective care at the Children’s Home in Uttaradit. He would be given an opportunity to start afresh, Paveena, who is in charge of his care, promised the public. “We’ll follow up with him to make sure he gets everything he needs,” she stated.
