Hon. Victor Oko Jumbo was chosen by lawmakers who support Governor Siminalayi Fubara on Wednesday to serve as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

This occurred 48 hours after Governor Fubara declared the 27 majority House members who had defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) nonexistent.

In the past 48 hours, the opposition APC has also given its majority-ruling members in the state assembly instructions to remove the governor.

In light of this, a source claims that a group of legislators got together on Wednesday and chose Jumbo, a ranking member who represents Bonny Constituency, as the new Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

After Edison, Oko is the third Speaker of the present administration.

Oko succeeds Edison Ehie and Martin Amaewhule as the third Speaker of the present administration.

Along with Jumbo becoming the Speaker on Wednesday, Hon. Sokari Goodboy became the Assembly’s Majority Leader.

Governor Sim Fubara received the support of Victor Oko, the newly elected Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Oko declared that the state’s people and the newly elected state assembly would collaborate.

Speaking to reporters following his inauguration in the state capital in Port Harcourt, the newly appointed Speaker promised that the Rivers Assembly would serve the interests of the state’s citizens.

He said: “We will brief the press and communicate our proceedings to the public and engage them, we will make sure that they are part of what we are doing. We will ensure that there is transparency and clarity in the 10th legislative assembly.

“I have directed the Clerk to notify the governor that a new leader has emerged in the Rivers State House of Assembly and we are ready to work for the Rivers people.”

Oko, the new Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, had taken the oath of office. Oko is loyal to Fubara.

Victor Jumbo was chosen as the Speaker by the two Rivers State House of Assembly members.
