The Department of State Services, DSS, Sokoto State Command, has alerted authorities to intelligence suggesting that terrorists and bandit groups may be planning attacks on tertiary institutions across the state.

The warning was contained in a letter dated July 18, 2026, addressed to the Sokoto State Government and signed on behalf of the State Director of Security, B. Abdulaziz.

In the security alert titled “Planned Attack on Tertiary Institutions by Terrorist and Bandit Gangs,” the Service disclosed that criminal elements were shifting their attention from primary and secondary schools to universities and other higher institutions.

According to the DSS, tertiary institutions could become targets because they accommodate large numbers of students, academic and non-academic workers, as well as their relatives, potentially creating opportunities for mass abductions.

The Service cautioned that any attack on the institutions could interrupt academic activities and heighten fear among students, staff and other members of the university community.

It therefore called for an immediate assessment of existing security arrangements and the deployment of stronger measures around tertiary institutions throughout the state.

The DSS disclosed that relevant security and emergency response agencies had already been informed about the intelligence.

It urged the agencies to take proactive steps to prevent any potential attacks and safeguard students, members of staff and educational facilities.

The Service also appealed to the Sokoto State Government to coordinate with relevant authorities and reinforce security arrangements around universities and other tertiary institutions across the state.
