President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has criticised politicians who faulted the President’s Independence Day address, accusing them of overlooking his position on the country’s economic reforms.
In a Friday post, Onanuga alleged that some of the politicians had already prepared their responses before Tinubu delivered his October 1 speech.
He said the critics failed to acknowledge what he described as an “immutable truth” contained in the President’s address.
Quoting Tinubu, Onanuga wrote, “Our reforms did not create the weaknesses in our economy. They confronted them.”
Tinubu had cautioned against demands to discontinue the ongoing reforms and return to subsidy regimes, describing such appeals as a “siren song” while referring to subsidies as “addictive.”
The President also stated that Nigeria’s economy recorded growth of more than four per cent in 2026, with both the oil and non-oil sectors contributing to the expansion.
“Our economy has grown by over 4 per cent this year. Both oil and non-oil sectors have contributed to the renewed period of stable growth,” Tinubu said.
